Is your smart TV tracking you? Here's how to check

Televisions are among the chattiest devices most people own. The tracking has a name — automatic content recognition — and the settings toggle that claims to stop it rarely stops the rest. The only way to know what your TV reports is to watch it talk.

What a TV actually reports

Modern smart TVs earn money after the sale. The mechanisms, from most to least invasive:

The settings menu is half an answer

Every brand buries an ACR toggle somewhere (Samsung calls it Viewing Information Services, LG calls it Live Plus, Vizio calls it Viewing Data). Turning it off is worth doing — but it only addresses the first item on the list. Telemetry, ad SDKs and app analytics keep going, and a firmware update can re-arrange the menus.

Trust, then verify: watch the traffic

Every report the TV files starts with a DNS lookup — a question like "where is this analytics server?" asked before any data moves. Log those lookups and the TV's behavior stops being a matter of settings-menu faith: you see exactly which ad, telemetry and ACR endpoints it contacted, and when, including the burst many TVs fire the moment they wake.

What the log can and cannot prove A DNS timeline shows who the TV contacted and when — not what was inside the messages. A telemetry endpoint contacted at 02:00 while the TV was "off" is a fact you can act on; what it uploaded is not visible from DNS. That's still enough to answer the practical question: is this thing quiet, or chatty?

Doing it with DNSight

Common questions

Will blocking tracker domains break my TV?
Curated packs are tuned to leave playback and app stores working while cutting ad and analytics endpoints. If a specific app objects, moving that device to a lighter pack takes a moment.
My TV is not smart — am I fine?
The TV may be, but the streaming stick plugged into it is doing the same reporting. Roku, Fire TV and Android TV devices are exactly as chatty.
Does turning off ACR in settings do anything?
Yes, and you should — it stops content fingerprinting. It does not stop platform telemetry, ad SDKs or per-app analytics, which is why verifying with a traffic log matters.
Can the TV bypass my router's DNS?
Some devices ship hard-coded resolvers. Blocking outbound port 53 and known DoH bypass endpoints at the router closes that door for the stubborn ones.
